August 10, 2020
Hello Golden Families,
Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year. Oh, what a strange summer it has been! We have missed our Golden Eagles more than ever and cannot wait to meet those students who will be joining us this fall! Due to the national pandemic, the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District announced on July 23rd that we will begin our 2020-2021 school year online. Our district has been working closely with teachers and staff to determine what this will look like for our Golden community. Last week, families and staff were sent the daily schedules that will be in place when we begin online next month (HERE). Our daily schedule closely mirrors a traditional school day. Students will log into their google classroom each day and be greeted with the daily schedule and their daily zoom link. The scheduled zoom blocks are intended to encompass the entire lesson time.
Example 45 minute Zoom lesson
5 minute lesson introduction
10 minute guided practice
20 minute independent practice- with teacher support
10 minute wrap up and time for questions
We know you have questions. We do too. This is new to all of us. In the spring we went to online learning in one afternoon. Our teachers at Golden did an incredible job of learning a new modality and created virtual classrooms overnight. Our students rose to the challenge and worked to learn in a new environment during a time of uncertainty. We were operating under a time where we were only requiring a minimum of 120 minutes a day of student work. Often independent. As we have had time to learn about online learning and a summer to prepare for a fall online, we will see changes to our daily school schedule, both in requirements and academic rigor.
The Golden School Office will open on Wednesday, August 12th. We will be open to the public 9:00-12:00 for appointments and 1:00-3:00 for “walk-ins”. Please visit our website for more information and to sign up.
We will continue to hold our Back to School Night as scheduled on Thursday, September 3rd. This will be an opportunity for you to meet your child’s teacher and get information that will be specific to your child’s online learning environment. All Back to School sessions will be recorded to allow for families with more than one child at Golden to be able to go back and watch each teacher’s presentation. A detailed schedule and instructions to log on to Back to School Night Sessions will be out in the next few weeks.
Over the next weeks, we will be working to create videos to welcome students to campus and hold online forums for families who are new to our community. We know this is traditionally an exciting time for our students and we want to make sure that our newest Eagles and their families have an opportunity to see what makes Golden Elementary an incredible community for everyone!
